The journey towards active places wraps up in Slovenia - the final meeting of the Placemaking and Sport project
What turns a space into a place? This question sparked the Placemaking and Sport project, and now, after 18 months of collaboration, the project has reached its final stages. Last week, partners gathered in the vibrant city of Ljubljana - a city rich in history and progressive urban design - for the project’s last full partner meeting.
A Warm Welcome in Jože Plečnik’s City
The meeting took place in Ljubljana's iconic City Hall, hosted by Deputy Mayor Dejan Crnek and Ina Šuklje, representing Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia. Their passion for promoting quality urban living for healthy living shone through as they shared the city's ongoing investments in sport and leisure. These efforts aim to inspire residents to stay active and embrace healthier lifestyles.
“Healthy living and sport are among Ljubljana’s top priorities” emphasized Crnek. He showcased key initiatives and highlighted the city's commitment to creating spaces that encourage movement and well-being.
Ina Šuklje delivered an inspiring presentation that emphasized the importance of cross-sectoral integration. Bringing together knowledge and action from various fields to create spaces that truly serve the community. She also shared Ljubljana's principles for high-quality planning of green areas, specifically designed to encourage physical activity. These guidelines highlighted the city’s commitment to thoughtful, inclusive urban design that benefits everyone.
The meeting also provided a platform for local activists, like Janez Sodržnik, President of SUS, who emphasized the importance of policy advocacy. "On a national level, our role is to push for policy-making,” he said, adding, “Every day, we need to fight for that crucial 1%.” His words stressed the constant efforts required to keep sports and recreation on the national agenda.
Exploring Navje Park: A Case Study in Placemaking
A study visit to Navje Park, guided by Ina Šuklje, was one of the highlights of the meeting. Designed for a diverse array of users, Northern City Park Navje exemplifies thoughtful urban planning. Its paths serve both recreational purposes and as vital urban routes. The park also features spaces for cultural events, a playground, and areas designed for children and youth—creating a sense of community and security for visitors.
Though not every aspect of its preliminary plan has been realised, Navje Park remains a charming and functional space where residents of Ljubljana can relax, play, and connect.
Lessons from the Project
Reflecting on the journey, project coordinator Laska Nenova (General Manager, BG Be Active) shared a key takeaway: “When people are put first in cities, amazing things can happen.” This sentiment captures the heart of the Placemaking and Sport project, which has consistently emphasized the power of designing spaces that puts human in the center.
As the project concludes, it leaves a legacy of inspiration, learning tools and actionable ideas for cities worldwide to create places that promote active and healthy lifestyles.
