DGI is a non-profit organisation aiming to strengthen exercise and grassroots sports in Denmark. For more than 150 years, DGI has been closely working with the associations to make Danes more active. Today, it has more than 6,400 associations and 100,000 passionate volunteers. DGI Greater Copenhagen is the associations' development house and represents 350,000 members in more than 800 sports associations.
The Placemaking and Sport Project Copenhagen pilot project focuses on attracting senior citizens in Jernbanebyen. Jernbanebyen is the last major piece of urban development in southern Copenhagen and will in the future become a central district designed as partially car-free, with schools, daycare centers, care homes, shopping facilities, and large parks.
The vision for Jernbanebyen is to create a green, inclusive, and vibrant district in Copenhagen. We would like to unfold this vision already now with Spor10, which will be one of the district's central urban spaces. The building houses actors who work with communities, mental and physical health, movement, sports, urban development, inclusion, and sustainability.
With Spor10, we already want to establish communities in Jernbanebyen before we start the actual urban development and thus lay the foundation stones for a common meeting place and gathering point in Jernbanebyen, where there is room for everyone.
Jernbanebyen is a new urban area that does not have inhabitants yet and there is a particular challenge to attract older citizens. Therefore, there has been a focus on organising events that are especially for them.
To create an organisational hang-up, the association Jernbanebyen IF has been established. The association will serve as a general platform for everyone willing to start physical activity in Jernbanebyen. The association was formed on 1 February 2024 and already has activities both for young and elderly. Please have a look at their website for more information: Jernbanebyen IF.
